Monday Devotional — What Your Calendar Confesses

Suggested Scripture (5–12 verses)

Revelation 3:14–20

Today’s Verse (from the reading)

Revelation 3:17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—

Devotional

A friend once decided to do a simple, uncomfortable exercise: for one month, they kept two “receipts.” The first was their actual receipts—every purchase logged without editing. The second was their calendar—every hour accounted for: work, scrolling, errands, workouts, shows, hobbies, and time with people.

At the end of the month, they expected to see a life centered on what they said mattered most: God, family, and meaningful service. But the “receipts” told a different story. The calendar showed plenty of time for productivity and entertainment, but almost no unhurried space for prayer, Scripture, worship, or presence with others. The bank statement showed small recurring costs—subscriptions, convenience spending, impulse buys—quietly adding up to a lifestyle built around comfort. Nothing scandalous, just a thousand choices that kept life “manageable” and faith optional.

That’s a Laodicea warning in modern form: outwardly fine, inwardly thin. Jesus doesn’t accuse them of obvious rebellion—He exposes a subtler danger: comfort that dulls hunger for God. “I need nothing” is not just a financial posture; it can become a spiritual one. And when that settles in, we may still look successful while becoming, in Jesus’ words, “poor, blind, and naked” where it matters most.

But notice Christ’s mercy in the passage: He doesn’t only rebuke; He invites. He counsels them to receive what only He can give—true riches, true sight, true covering—and He stands at the door and knocks. Today, one practical way to respond is to let your time and money become a mirror, not a source of shame. Ask Jesus to show you what they’ve been saying about your trust—and then take one concrete step to re-center your life around Him.

A simple Monday practice:

  • Calendar: block 15 minutes today for Scripture and prayer before anything else claims you.

  • Money: choose one purchase you don’t make this week and redirect it—toward generosity, someone in need, or a gospel purpose.

  • Heart: pray, “Jesus, where I’ve said ‘I need nothing,’ teach me dependence again.”

Other passages to consider

  • Matthew 6:19–24 — Treasure, heart, and the rival masters of God vs. money.

  • 1 Timothy 6:17–19 — A call to hope in God, be rich in good works, and hold wealth loosely.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, expose where comfort has replaced dependence. Give me clear sight, real hunger for You, and the courage to reorder my time and spending around Your kingdom. Amen.
