Monday Devotional: Finding Ourselves in the After

Scripture Reading: Luke 24:9-24

Today's Verse: "And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them." - Luke 24:11

Reflection:

Sarah stared at her graduation cap lying on the dresser, feeling strangely empty. She'd worked four years for this moment, celebrated with family, posted the photos—but now what? The achievement she'd dreamed of was behind her, and the future felt like a question mark. She wasn't alone in this feeling.

The disciples knew this "after" confusion well. They'd witnessed the impossible—Jesus had risen—but Luke 24 shows them struggling with what came next. When the women returned from the tomb with earth-shattering news, the disciples' response wasn't celebration but disbelief. The Greek word used here, leros, means "idle talk" or "nonsense." Even faced with resurrection hope, they felt lost and uncertain.

Notice how Jesus responds to their confusion. He doesn't scold them for their doubt or rush them past their uncertainty. Instead, He walks alongside them on the road to Emmaus, listens to their disappointment, and gently reveals Himself in their questions. He meets them exactly where they are—in the murky space between miracle and understanding.

The "after" moments in our lives—after graduations, celebrations, spiritual highs, or even answered prayers—can feel surprisingly disorienting. We expect clarity to follow breakthrough, but often find ourselves asking, "Now what?" Like the disciples, we may struggle to believe that God is still present and working, even when we've seen His faithfulness before.

But Jesus specializes in these in-between spaces. He doesn't abandon us to figure out our next steps alone. In our uncertainty, He walks beside us, reveals Himself in ordinary moments, and transforms our confusion into clarity—not all at once, but step by faithful step.

Additional Passages:

  • Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (A time for everything)

  • Philippians 3:12-14 (Pressing on toward the goal)

Prayer: Jesus, in these uncertain "after" moments, help me trust that You're still present and working. When I can't see the next step clearly, give me peace to walk alongside You, knowing You'll reveal what I need to know when I need to know it. Amen.
